On August 1, 2012, the Department of Defense awarded Luke AFB the F-35 pilot training program. The estimated value of the facility improvement program to support the new aircraft ranges from $125 to $186 million and is forecast for completion in 2017. The program features include runway improvements, numerous facility renovations, and new facilities construction including new Squad Operations buildings, Fuel Stands, Air Maintenance Hangers and the $54 million Academic Training Facility which will house 12 F-35 flight simulators.
